I’m an SEO guy & have been for more than 12 years. I’ve been through all of the algorithm changes, penalties, ranking highs and ranking lows. I’ve ranked websites for countless keywords and improved traffic & conversion rates for 100’s of sites.
Like most agency owners. I often spend most of my time on client sites and regularly neglect my own. Fun fact: I heavily dislike my website, but it converts.
So the saying goes “if it ain't broke, don’t fix it”.
I haven’t spent any serious time on my website in a few years, but just a few months ago I gave myself a mission to create some epic case studies (another thing I’ve neglected) and showcase my skill set as I prepare to rebrand myself as an agency. Whilst I’ve got some great case studies coming up for my clients, I thought who better to start with than myself.
This is a quick story on how I doubled my traffic in 3 months.
Want to know how I did it?
As mentioned, embarrassingly I’ve neglected my site for a couple of years. You can see in the graph below that my organic traffic levels hadn’t really changed in over a year and a half.
Doing the bare minimum, I’d added some links to various pages over the year and acquired some naturally through interviews and blog mentions but hadn’t made any serious efforts to improve things in quite a while.
A lot of my work comes through referral and I receive enough enquiries through organic search to keep myself and my team busy, so increasing enquiries wasn’t really a priority for me. What had been circulating in my mind for the last year or so was to create landing pages for each major city.
As mentioned above, I’m also in the process of rebranding as an agency. We’ll be specialising in marketing and conversion optimisation for E-commerce, Finance & legal websites, so i wanted to create some content that focused on these industries and how we could help them.
Surfer SEO is my favourite tool for optimising content and looking for new keyword opportunities. I didn’t have a lot of content on my site around e-commerce so I wanted to build out a general e-commerce page, then link this out to specific platform pages (Magento, Woocommerce & Shopify).
I performed some keyword research for each of these pages and then cross referenced them in Ahrefs in order to find the ones I should focus my content around. After creating a keyword strategy for each page, I used Surfer to break down the content metrics of the top 3 websites ranking for the primary keywords I wanted to rank for. I created content plans for each page using these metrics and provided them to my copywriter. Once received I added them to the site, closed my computer and took a (long overdue) holiday.
I checked my rankings and traffic data 3 months later and was overwhelmed by the below
